Usually, Disney's restorations include both the original (restored) audio mix as well as an organically remixed high-res surround track. Less enthralling, but still wonderful, is the film's 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix. If you've never experienced Bambi before, this is now the single best way to view the film. And the encode follows suit, with nary a compression flaw or distortion in sight. To be frank, this is one gorgeous restoration without a single blemish, be it a speck of dust, dirt or scratches. Bambi shows his age a little more than some of Disney's other restorations, but color, depth and clarity are positively astounding, particularly considering the film was originally released in 1942.
#BLU RAY AUDIO GENESIS FULL#
Using the AVC codec (on a dual-layered BD50 disc), Bambi is presented in 1.33:1 full frame, with or without Disney View (which fills the side black bars with artwork from the film). And, as per usual, the disc is packed with a terrific array of bonus features, for both adults and kids, as well as a rock-solid A/V presentation that bests any previously available copy of the film. It certainly plays well to the little tots, but it's a beautiful film to experience as an adult.Īnd if you're a longtime fan, get ready to enjoy the film in a whole new light as Bambi comes to Blu-ray as a member of Disney's prestigious Diamond Collection. If you're like me and you've never given Bambi a spin – do yourself a favor. It's staggering how many truly classic innovations, ideas and character-types are born right in this little 70-minute film. It's clear how hard these folks pushed the boundaries of the animated form, filling the screen with brilliant artwork and dozens of moving pieces and parts. Bambi is nothing short of a dazzling showcase for Disney animators, and their genius is found in nearly every frame of this film. This is a film that's focused on the subtle details – the mood and spirit of the environment – not the story. The woods are initially dark and brooding, but a beam of light shines into the frame and things glow and glisten as Bambi is brought into the world. Audiences are slowly drawn into the film's playground – thanks to the truly miraculous innovation of the multi-plane camera. Just look at the film's long tracking shot at the very beginning of the picture.

Bambi examines our world is such unique ways – how it moves, how it grows as well as the mysteries, the majesty, the comedy, and the horror of the woods.

Cut beneath the thin plot and you'll find a much deeper, more meaningful film about the nature of the forest and, in turn, the nature of life. But there's a lot of subtlety to the nature of the story that can easily go unnoticed. In the story department, Bambi is arguably a little on the thin side.
